Day 20: RoomScan

The LiDAR technology in the RoomScan app is able to scan and build a full building of 3D objects. Scanning one room at a time, the app identifies walls, distances, floors, ceilings, doors, and more to properly layout the room. The various viewpoints are 2D floorplans, 3D, and 3D+. The difference between the last two viewpoints is that one is creating a shell of the walls and the 3D+ layers the objects within the room as well.

After the scanning is complete, view the scanned spaces in augmented reality. The two AR views are 3D and 3D+. While 3D+ includes more details, the individual scanned dots make it more difficult to make sense of the space without zooming out. The option to see the space in true size in augmented reality allows the user to "walk into" the rooms in 3D and 3D+ viewpoints.

"3D landscape scanning is the next wave of the future as it uses location anchoring to immediately use latitude, longitude, and altitude." page 44 of The Immersive Classroom

Steps to Get Started:

  1. Download the RoomScan app (iOS only).

  2. Select New Property, then New Room, and finally Start Scan to begin scanning a room.

  3. Label each wall to begin establishing the frame and shape of the blueprint.

  4. Finish the scan, add additional rooms if preferred, view the 3D spaces in augmented reality.
